 What is an Essay: An essay is a piece of writing that highlights the author’s argument. Essays are used as literary criticisms, political manifestos, and learned arguments. They are the daily observations and reflections of the author.

Essay and its concept has been extended to the media beyond writing. It forms an author’s personal point of view. Essays are a way to assess an individual’s understanding of a particular idea.

An essay is defined to be vague, overlapping with an article or a short story. Essays are independent pieces of work. It is usually written in prose, in a discursive way that brings together an author’s ideas, arguments, and articles of evidence to the answer to the mentioned problem or question.

Essays are further divided into four broad types that include narrative essay, descriptive essay, expository essay, and persuasive essay. A narrative essay is an essay where the author narrates an incident or a particular story through the essay. The main aim of the writer is to make the essay vivid and real so that the readers feel as if they are a part of the story that is being narrated.
Places, objects, and memories are described in a descriptive essay. The writer tends to paint a picture through his words to evoke the senses of the description to the reader. The expository essay is a balanced study of a topic by the writer. It is based on facts, statistics, and examples. There are subtypes to an expository essay which are contrast essay, cause, and effect essays.

In a persuasive essay, the Purpose of the writer is to bring the reader to his side of the argument. It is a way to convince the reader of the writer’s point of view. An essay is a non-fictional piece of writing where the writer is trying to tell the truth. It is used to make a point which is the most impactful as well as challenging part of an essay. All the topics in an article fit together perfectly, not being just a bunch of words. Its main goal is to interest its readers, to change their way of thinking. The writer makes it a point to get the readers involved in the ideas it presents and getting them to adapt to those ideas.
